Newcastle ended their 56-year wait without a major trophy on Sunday afternoon as they beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
Keen to channel the emotion of the day in a more measured manner compared to two years ago, when they lost to Manchester United, the determined Magpies were far superior in the opening period. They outmanoeuvred and outfought a lifeless Liverpool side perhaps still feeling the effects of Tuesday's 120-minute slog with Paris Saint-Germain.
While Newcastle impressed, there was a lack of action in both boxes until Dan Burn headed home superbly from Kieran Trippier's corner on the stroke of half-time, sparking scenes of pandemonium among the Toon Army, who were celebrating their first cup final goal at Wembley since 1976.
A Liverpool response was projected as inevitable, but their task was made harder within ten minutes of the second half after Alexander Isak swept home Newcastle's second. The Reds' best period of the contest arrived in the aftermath, but the Magpies continued to pose a threat and came close on a couple of occasions to ending the contest with a third goal.
They seemed to be coasting to glory, but Federico Chiesa's cool stoppage time finish set up the tensest of conclusions which didn't result in a second Liverpool goal. Newcastle got there.
