Cannonier, who is part of the Liverpool academy set-up at the moment, played the final 30 minutes for Leeds Under-21 side in their 2-1 defeat against their West Ham United counterparts in Premier 2 on Monday.

The 20-year-old centre-forward was born in Leeds and turned out for the West Yorkshire club at youth level before joining Liverpool in 2015.

Four years later in 2019, Cannonier grabbed worldwide attention as a ballboy when he enabled Liverpool and England international right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold to send in a quickly-taken corner for Divock Origi to score the decisive goal in the Reds’ comeback win against Spanish and European giants Barcelona in the second leg of a UEFA Champions League semi-final time.

View: Oakley Cannonier is one for the future for Leeds United

Cannonier has been a prolific goalscorer for Liverpool at youth level, but he has had injury problems in recent times and has not progressed as much as one would have expected him to.

The England Under-19 international centre-forward has been able to play just four appearances for the Liverpool Under-21 side so far this season.

Leeds, who have been linked with Matt Targett, are a massive club, and having played for the West Yorkshire outfit at youth level, Cannonier will know all about what it would take for him to succeed at Elland Road.

Cannonier is just 20 now and is only starting his career. He is one for the future, and if Leeds do sign him now, then they must allow him time to develop and afford him patience to grow.

Leeds are aiming to win automatic promotion from the Championship to the Premier League at the end of the season.
