NJ/NY Gotham FC might be in the middle of the preseason, but national teams are back in full swing all over the world. The Bats saw multiple players depart to represent their countries.
While the team has fewer USWNT players on the roster after the mass exodus this offseason, there are numerous options for players to get the call-up to play for their country. As such, Gotham FC saw seven players selected for international duty. So, let's take a look and see what the Bats will be doing with their national teams.
To begin, Tierna Davidson and Emily Sonnett will join some of their old teammates like Jenna Nighswonger as they suit up for the USWNT. The Stars and Stripes will play three games in the annual SheBelieves Cup, battling against Colombia, Australia, and Japan. As always the US brought in other top sides to begin the year, challenging the ladies early on.
Meanwhile, Bruninha was called up to Brazil. Unlike her Gotham teammates, she will not play in any matches, for Brazil does not have anything scheduled. Instead, it will be like the USWNT camp in January, which will allow players to work on their craft and express why they should be called up in the future.
One of the NJ/NY side's newest signings, Stella Nyamekye, will suit up for Ghana for their friendly against Morocco. She will finally join the team after the international break, illuminating that there might have been visa or work permit issues.
The remaining players will then play in the UEFA Women’s Nations League. Ann-Katrin Berger's Germany will play against the Netherlands and Austria, Jess Carter will suit up for England against Portugal and Spain, and Jéssica Silva and Portugal will face England and Belgium. All three players' countries are in the top league of the Nations League, Group A.
Therefore, the European players are the only ones playing competitive matches. The SheBelieves Cup is a tournament but the fixtures played are considered friendlies.
Notably, there are other players that could be called up at some point in 2025. Gabi Portilho, who has been playing for Brazil since 2022, should see some playing time with the national team. Midge Purce, who is still working her way back to her normal self, will hopefully find herself back in the mix for the USWNT. Of course, anyone else might get a call-up for their country as the season progresses.
This time will be good for Gotham FC's international players. They can continue to prepare for the upcoming season while competing at a high level.
