Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada has confirmed there will be funds to invest in the squad this summer, regardless of whether European qualification is secured.

United are 14th in the Premier League table after a disastrous domestic campaign. The Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag in November and brought in Ruben Amorim as his replacement. Amorim made just one senior signing in January, as Patrick Dorgu arrived from Lecce in a £25.2m deal.

Amid cost-cutting procedures in the background and comments from co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe this week, there are fears over limited funds for Amorim to invest in the squad this summer.

However, Berrada has eased fears from the fanbase and said United are ready to ‘invest’ in search of improvement. While he admitted securing Champions League qualification, via winning the Europa League this season, would boost funds, there will still be money available to spend regardless.

He also dismissed suggestions that the club could sell players ‘for financial reasons’, after academy products Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho were linked with exits in January.

“There’s no doubt that if we qualify to the Champions League, we will have more revenues and have more capacity to invest in the team,” he told the club’s official website.

“But we are putting in place various financial measures to allow us to go and invest at the summer, even if we’re outside of Europe.

“Ultimately, we want to be more efficient in our investment into the squad. So just because we’ll have more revenues to invest if we’re in the Champions League, it doesn’t mean we’re going to go and over-invest.

“We need to be cautious and try to make as many good decisions as we can in recruitment. And also when it comes to sales, we will do it purely on the basis of whether it helps improve the team or not, not for financial reasons.”
