An official club statement has been released by Manchester City on Tuesday afternoon providing an update on Nathan Ake’s latest injury setback.

Words from the club follow an upload from the Netherlands international to his official social media channels on Monday evening, in which the 30-year-old announced that he had undergone surgery on a foot problem.

“This has been such a frustrating season for me but I’ve now had successful surgery on a fracture in my foot which has been bothering me for months and I’m looking positively to the future,” Ake wrote.

Accompanied by an image of himself post-surgery, the Manchester City defender continued, “Rest and recover now, see you soon Cityzens and thank you for your support.”

In light of confirmation from the Dutchman, the Premier League champions themselves have since released a statement confirming the surgical procedure undertaken by their versatile centre-back in the last few days.

A statement issued by Manchester City on Tuesday afternoon read, “Nathan Ake has undergone successful surgery on a fracture in his left foot.”

“The City defender was substituted at half-time of Saturday’s FA Cup fifth round victory over Plymouth at the Etihad Stadium after aggravating the problem which has caused him discomfort during the course of his career.”

The statement continued, “He will now rest and recover before starting a period of rehabilitation. Everyone at City wishes Nathan a speedy recovery.”

Nathan Ake joins two other fellow central defenders on the recovery table for an extended period of time, and becomes the second Manchester City centre-back to undergo surgery in a matter of days.

That follows Manuel Akanji, who sustained a problem during the first-half of Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League last-16 play-off first-leg at the Etihad Stadium last month, undergoing surgery days later.

John Stones has avoided the same decision made by medical professionals, although the England international is expected to be ruled out for up to 10 weeks with a thigh injury sustained in the second-leg of the aforementioned fixture.

In more positive news on the injury and fitness front, Rodri has stepped up his recovery process by returning to individual training on grass with the ball at his feet at the City Football Academy in the last few weeks.

Manager Pep Guardiola has hinted that last year’s Ballon d’Or winner could make a return in Premier League action before the end of the season, while Oscar Bobb is close to a return too after recovering from an ankle injury setback in early February.
