Ruben Amorim’s bad luck continues ahead of massive quarter-final second-leg clash at Old Trafford

Manchester United have been dealt another injury blow amid reports that Joshua Zirkzee could now be sidelined for the remainder of the season.

The Dutch forward limped off clutching his hamstring shortly after half-time in Sunday’s miserable 4-1 defeat away at Newcastle in the Premier League, replaced by January signing Patrick Dorgu.

Zirkzee looked understandably frustrated as he received treatment and then was helped from the pitch, with head coach Ruben Amorim quickly ruling him out of Thursday’s huge Europa League quarter-final second-leg decider against Lyon at Old Trafford.

"We had to make rotation because we are trying to recover in two days from each game," the Portuguese said after making changes for a dismal loss at St James’ Park. "But trying to win this game also.

"Josh, I think he will be out for some games. So, let’s focus on the next one [against Lyon].”

The BBC now report that there are doubts as to whether Zirkzee can play again this season after tests, with Amorim set to offer another update when he addresses the media on Wednesday before the visit of Lyon.

It would be a sad end to Zirkzee’s recent resurgence, with the oft-maligned 23-year-old having scored important goals in the Europa League - including United’s second in an initial dramatic 2-2 draw with Lyon in France last week.

It has been a frustrating first season in English football for Zirkzee, who has netted only seven times and provided three assists so far in 48 total appearances across all competitions since a £36.5million summer move from Serie A side Bologna to link up with Amorim’s predecessor and compatriot Erik ten Hag.

Along with striker Rasmus Hojlund, the duo have been subject to repeated criticism from fans and pundits, who believe struggling United need to totally overhaul their attacking options in the next transfer window.

As well as Zirkzee, the Red Devils look set to remain without a host of other first-team regulars for a crunch decider against Lyon, including fellow Dutchman Matthijs de Ligt.

Amad Diallo is still sidelined too, along with Lisandro Martinez, Ayden Heaven, Jonny Evans and Toby Collyer.
