Manchester United are interested in signing Atalanta striker Mateo Retegui, as per reports.
Much has been written about Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho’s struggles under Ruben Amorim. However, Rasmus Hojlund has underwhelmed just as much if not more.
The Dane has struggled to deal with Premier League’s physicality and his touch and finishing has led to many groans at Old Trafford.
In recent games, Hojlund, who moved to United from Atalanta in 2023 in a big-money move, has been outperformed by Joshua Zirkzee, leading to suggestions of his exit in the summer.
Amid this, it has emerged that the Red Devils are once again monitoring Atalanta’s attack to strengthen their frontline.
According to Fichajes, United are “willing to take” Mateo Retegui away from the Bergamo-based outfit.
The Italian striker has established himself as one of Serie A’s best forwards this term, having scored 23 goals and registered four assists in 33 appearances across all competitions.
The 25-year-old is known for his sharp movement in and around the penalty area and possesses a killer instinct in front of goal.
The Spanish outlet add that United face competition from Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal for the forward’s signature.
Atalanta would reportedly not part ways with their prized asset for less than €50-60 million.
Retegui is tied to the Italian outfit until the summer of 2028, having joined the club from Genoa last summer.
The Atalanta talent has done very well this term but after seeing how their last two strikers from Serie A have fared in the Premier League, it would be best for the Mancunians to target a goalscorer who has consistently performed in England’s top flight or in the Champions League for a number of seasons.
