Manchester United record narrow victory at Everton | OneFootball

Grace Clinton’s early goal proved to be the difference as Manchester United defeated Everton 1-0 at Walton Hall Park this afternoon.

The England international midfielder netted in the fourth minute as Manchester United made it back-to-back wins in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Everton went into their first home game of the new season looking to bounce back from a 4-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend while Manchester United arrived on Merseyside having defeated West Ham United 3-0 at Old Trafford on opening day.

It was the visitors who took the lead in just the fourth minute at Walton Hall Park. Capitalising on a mistake from Justine Vanhaevermaet, former-Blue Clinton cut in to receive the ball and she slotted it home beyond Courtney Brosnan.

The Toffees tried to respond immediately as Katja Snoeijs took aim at goal, but her effort was blocked on the line by Maya Le Tissier.

Everton’s summer signing Inma Gabarro then landed awkwardly after a challenge with Leah Galton. The Spaniard was unable to continue and was stretchered off the pitch. The club will be hoping that her injury doesn’t turn out to be severe.

After play eventually resumed, Manchester United were keen to find a second goal. Geyse squared the ball to Elisabeth Terland, but she couldn’t make clear contact and it went wide.

Early in the second half, Millie Turner had a sight of goal but her strike dipped into the arms of Brosnan.

At the other end, Lucy Hope went close to getting Everton’s first goal of the campaign with a header but visiting keeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce collected the ball with relative ease.

Minutes later, Ella Toone found a gap and tried to curl the ball around Brosnan, but the keeper displayed quick-thinking and dived to keep the shot out.

Manchester United had the opportunity to go two up when Melvine Malard played in Clinton. The goal was wide open, and Brosnan was nowhere to be found but Vanhaevermaet did well to send the ball over the top of the net.

In the end, one goal separated the two sides as Manchester United made it back-to-back wins in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Both sides are in Women’s League Cup action in midweek. Everton travel to Newcastle United while Manchester United play host to Liverpool.
