Marco Rose is under pressure at RB Leipzig, but the head coach is “very happy” man after his side secured a place in the DFB Pokal semi-final after beating fellow Bundesliga Wolfsburg on Wednesday night, with thanks to Benjamin Sesko’s penalty after a controversial decision.
It’s Leipzig’s fifth DFB Pokal semi-final appearance in seven years and after the game, supporters voiced their support for Marco Rose, chanting his name. This comes after the German’s position at the Saxony club is under scrutiny with many suggesting that this is a decisive week in the club’s plans – but a place in the semi-final will certainly ease some of the pressure on Rose, whose Leipzig side sit sixth in the Bundesliga table, behind Freiburg and Mainz.
Speaking after the game, Rose said: “I’m happy about it [on the Leipzig fans’ support for Rose], very happy. We have kept the chance of something big.”
David Raum also echoed his support for Rose, adding: “We are playing for our coach. This victory is very important for him, for us and for the atmosphere.”
Sporting Director Marcel Schäfer further added: “The victory gives us a boost. I hope our chests will grow a little, our self-confidence will grow a little.”
But their 1-0 win over Wolfsburg didn’t come without controversy. Benjamin Sesko’s penalty was awarded after the Slovenian’s shot hit the arm of Kilian Fischer from close range and despite the VAR intervening, match official Tobias Reichel didn’t go to the monitor to review the situation.
However, it will certainly ease some of the pressure on Rose, who had just two wins in nine games across all competitions before last night’s win. But Leipzig must now take their performance into Saturday’s game against Mainz, who sit level points with the Saxony club.
