Mats Hummels spell with Roma looks to be coming to a disappointing end this summer as the 2014 World Cup winner struggles for minutes and form with the Giallorossi. He signed a one year contract with the Serie A side after leaving Borussia Dortmund last year but Corriere dello Sport report he has done little to convince Roma to extend his contract.

It has been an underwhelming season for the 36-year-old who has made just 11 starts in Serie A and struggled to win over any of the three managers Roma have employed since his arrival in September. He has spent the majority of the season on the bench and has failed to deliver the level of performance expected. There have been a number of reasons for Hummels’ disappointing season that have led Corriere dello Sport to be certain he won’t be renewing this summer.

Problems began to surface under Ivan Juric who seemed to sense a motivation issue that severely limited the German’s playing time during Juric’s 12 game spell in charge. Things haven’t improved much under Claudio Ranieri, the legendary coach deploying Hummels just three times in the past eight Serie A games.

When he has played his performances have left a lot to be desired, in his only 23 minute cameo under ex-boss Juric he scored an own goal in a 5-1 defeat to Fiorentina. Despite a brief upturn in form with the arrival of Ranieri, Roma fans have began to grow disillusioned with the centre half and Thursday’s debacle seemed to be the final straw.

Hummels was sent off for a lunge in the second leg of the Europa League tie with Athletic Bilbao and took to social media to apologize to Giallorossi supporters saying: “I want to apologize to our fans and my teammates. I let everyone down with a mistake that was simply stupid and horrendous.”

While this seemed a heartfelt and genuine apology, the ex-Germany international’s use of social media has irked fans who feel he should be focusing on his footballing performances more.

For these reasons it seems almost certain Hummels will be clearing out his locker come the end of May, with Roma struggling to justify paying an annual salary of €3.6 million to a player who is making little impact on and off the pitch.
