Multiple current and former teammates have sent Jamie Paterson messages after joining his hometown club Coventry City on a short-term contract.

Coventry City have signed Jamie Paterson until the end of the 2024/25 Championship season, with the versatile attacker moving to his hometown club for the first time to link up with Frank Lampard.

He has been linked with a switch to Cov on numerous occasions, as WalesOnline detailed their interest during his time at Swansea City in 2023.

Most recently, Paterson represented Charlotte FC during the 2024 MLS campaign, but the 33-year-old has been without a club since the conclusion of the US domestic season in December.

Prior to that, Paterson made a whopping 348 appearances at Championship level for a number of different clubs, and signing a player with that sort of experience on a free transfer could be a real coup for Coventry.

In his prime, the 33-year-old was arguably unlucky not to get a chance in the Premier League, and he has over 100 goal involvements in the second tier, with 55 goals and 52 assists to his name.

Paterson came through at Walsall and has spent the vast majority of his career in the second tier, turning out for the likes of Nottingham Forest, Derby and, more notably, Bristol City and Swansea.

Having most recently turned out for Dean Smith's MLS side, Lampard told Coventry Live last month that Paterson is currently training with Coventry as he bids to maintain fitness after becoming a free agent.

Now, he has been handed a deal until the end of the season, with the versatile winger or attacking midfielder adding vital depth to their ranks ahead of the final games of the campaign in 2024/25.

Lampard said: “I’m really pleased to have Jamie join us. He has great experience and is a quality player. He is a really good addition for us and gives us competition in attacking areas with his versatility.”

Coventry took to Instagram to showcase Paterson's background supporting Coventry as a boy, stating: "Dreams do come true. You’re finally home, @jpato10. 🩵"

Matty Godden said: "Love this 🩵🩵🩵"

Martyn Waghorn was also in the replies: "Love it @jpato10 👏🏻👏🏻💙"

What Jamie Paterson could bring to Frank Lampard and Coventry City

The attacking midfielder turned 33 in December, so he's certainly not a youngster; but if the terms are right for this deal, he'd be good to have around until the end of the season at least.

Paterson is a classy operator at this level who could still make a big difference for any side down in mid-table or below, one would imagine. His lack of football in recent months will be the natural drawback, but he is now regaining fitness and sharpness.

The experienced midfielder is still good enough to start at Championship level, but he'd also be an excellent impact player from the bench if Coventry were chasing a goal, and he'll bring flair and creativity that not too many players at this level possess.

Also, having been born in the city, Paterson may relish the chance to finally get the chance to play for his hometown side. He will also play and fight for the badge more than other squad members, which is something supporters will admire.
