Désiré Doué (19) was the man who made the difference for Paris Saint-Germain as they beat Aston Villa at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday, putting them in the driving seat in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie.
Despite dominating in the first half, PSG found themselves briefly behind when, against the run of play, Morgan Rogers opened the scoring for Aston Villa. However, it took just four minutes for Les Parisiens to level the tie. It was Doué, who now has 12 goals in all competitions, who got the goal, curling home a shot from outside the box off the underside of the bar; Emiliano Martínez was left rooted to the spot.
“My first thought was to cross,” the France international revealed in a post-match interview with Canal Plus. “But there weren’t many options so I chose to shoot and it went in. I’m having a lot of fun here.”
PSG then took the lead thanks to Khivcha Kvaratskhelia early in the second half with a stunning goal having forced the Villa defence to retreat before unleashing a thunderous drive into the roof of Martínez’s net. “The best goal of the evening? It’s mine,” joked Doué, who earned a rating of 8 from Get French Football News as PSG secured a 3-1 win that puts them firmly in the driving seat in this quarter-final tie.
“We know that there is a second half. We will approach it with the same seriousness and we will go there to win,” concluded Doué as he and his teammates look to finish the job in Birmingham next Tuesday.
