Momentum is with Newcastle United. A sixth win in seven, a confident dressing room, and a Champions League return now well within reach.
But Sunday’s clash against Brighton at the Amex Stadium is no walk in the park. The Seagulls are hunting European football of their own — and Eddie Howe must get every call right to ensure his side stay ahead of the pack.
Here is the Newcastle predicted lineup vs Brighton as the Magpies prepare for one of their toughest remaining away tests.
The undisputed number one. Pope returned from injury with questions around his sharpness, but recent weeks have silenced any doubts. Commanding in the air and quick off his line, his presence will be vital against a Brighton side that loves to work the ball into the box. A clean sheet on the South Coast would go a long way in securing another massive three points.
Vice-captain, set-piece specialist, and Newcastle’s most creative wide outlet. Trippier has six assists in the league and remains a vocal leader on and off the pitch. With Brighton likely to dominate possession in spells, his positional awareness and calm distribution will be key in keeping shape and launching counter-attacks.
The Swiss international has been a quiet warrior at the back this season. Strong in the air, composed on the ball, and one of the best line-breakers from deep, Schar’s ability to read Brighton’s movement-heavy forward line will be tested. His leadership becomes even more important with Lascelles and Botman still unavailable.
Back at his old stomping ground, Dan Burn will have a point to prove. His goal against Ipswich — his first league strike of the season — shows he can still make an impact at both ends. Expect a physical battle against Welbeck or Ferguson, with Burn’s aerial dominance likely to be a major asset at set pieces.
A breakthrough star this season. With Matt Targett and Lewis Hall sidelined, Livramento has seized his chance. His pace, recovery tackles, and composure under pressure have earned Howe’s trust. Up against the pace of Minteh or Mitoma, the 21-year-old will need to stay switched on throughout.
Everything flows through Bruno. The Brazilian is back to his best — dictating play, winning duels, and carrying the ball through midfield with elegance and tenacity. Brighton’s technical midfielders will try to frustrate, but Guimaraes thrives in chaos and will be the heartbeat of everything positive Newcastle do.
Growing into the role. After a tough introduction to English football, Tonali now looks settled. His range of passing, ability to slow the game down, and defensive coverage help free up Guimarães to push forward. Against Brighton’s structured midfield, Tonali will be responsible for ensuring Newcastle do not get overrun.
Energy, timing, and verticality. Willock’s forward bursts are a unique weapon in Howe’s midfield. He complements Bruno and Tonali perfectly and is often the untracked runner in the box. With Joelinton out, Willock is tasked with replicating that drive and intensity in the middle third.
One of the surprise stars of the campaign. Murphy has more Premier League assists than any Magpie and is second only to Mo Salah in the overall league chart. His decision-making in the final third has improved dramatically, and his delivery will be crucial with Isak lurking. Deserves to start on merit.
Irreplaceable. Isak has 26 goals in all competitions and is arguably the most elegant striker in the league. He stretches defences, dribbles past players with ease, and finishes with ice in his veins. Brighton’s high line could play into his hands — expect him to be the difference-maker once again.
A big call here, but one Howe is expected to make. Barnes brings control, calm, and efficiency in front of goal. He may not carry the raw explosiveness of Gordon, but his link-up with Isak and overlapping support from Livramento makes him a more balanced pick for this tactical battle.
