Inter already knew they would face a Dutch team that just eliminated a fellow Serie A side going into the draw and have been paired up with Feyenoord, while Roma and Lazio avoided an early Derby in the Europa League.
The Eredivisie side will be helmed by new coach Robin van Persie after knocking out Milan with a caretaker manager. If the Nerazzurri advanced, they’d face either Bayern Munich or Bayer Leverkusen. Their side of the bracket is completed by Barcelona, Lille, Borussia Dortmund, and Benfica.
Inter are the lone Italian representative in Serie A after the disastrous playoff, while Serie A has two sides in the Europa League, Roma and Lazio. The two capital clubs not only avoided a crosstown clash in the Round of 16, which had a 50/50 chance of happening, but could only meet up in the final. The Giallorossi will take on Athletic Club, while their ‘cousins’ will lock horns with Viktoria Plzen.
Fenerbahçe or Rangers would await the Claudio Ranieri-led outfit if it went through, while the Biancocelesti would tangle with Bodo/Glimt or Olympiacos.
Inter vice-president Javier Zanetti reacted to the draw (via Ansa).
“Our path in the Champions League has been excellent so far, but it’ll be a new competition now. We must respect Feyenoord since we have seen what they have been capable of. There are the premises for us to advance. We’ll need to play well, which depends on us. We have a great responsibility. The Champions League is prestigious, and we’ll try to bring Italy as far as possible. We can’t choose between competitions. We know what it means to win the Scudetto, but we’ll honor the cup trying to reach the final.”
