Bayern Munich have strengthened their goalkeeping position with the signing of FC Köln and German youth international Jonas Urbig (21) for a reported fee that could exceed €10m.
Urbig has signed a contract until June 2029.
Upon the arrival of Urbig, Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund said: “We are delighted that in signing Jonas Urbig, we have been able to complete another transfer with a view to the future. He is one of the most promising young goalkeepers in German football, is very ambitious and has huge potential. Jonas is a modern goalkeeper who, with the way he interprets the goalkeeping game fits in very well with FC Bayern’s style of play.”
Urbig added: “FC Bayern are one of the biggest clubs in the world. I’m proud to be here now and I’m looking forward to getting to know my new team as quickly as possible. My goal is to work on myself professionally every day and to continue to develop in our goalkeeping group led by Manuel Neuer.”
Born in Euskirchen, 43km from Köln, Urbig came through the club’s youth academy, while representing at each youth level, making his Köln debut this season after time on loan at Jahn Regensburg and Greuther Furth. Although number one going into the 2024/25 season, Urbig lost his place to Marvin Schwabe and hasn’t played for the Billy Goats since October 25 in a 2-1 defeat against Paderborn.
One of the most sought after young German goalkeepers, Bayern Munich finally got their man to act as an understudy to Manuel Neuer alongside Daniel Peretz, and the returning Alexander Nübel who is currently on loan at fellow Bundesliga side Stuttgart.
