Habib Beye has replaced Jorge Sampaoli as Rennes head coach, the Ligue 1 side has announced. The former Newcastle and Marseille defender has put pen to paper over a short-term contract for the remainder of the season. Stade Rennais will extend Beye’s stay in the dugout for a further year under certain conditions, L’Equipe understands that Beye will remain Rennes’ head coach as long as Rennes remain in Ligue 1. Beye was previously of interest to Nantes and was even considered by Stade Rennais following the dismissal of Julien Stéphan back in November.
Beye was a free agent after leading Red Star to a Ligue 2 promotion last summer. The former Senegal international will be tasked to steer Rennes out of a relegation battle. Rennes are 16th in the Ligue 1 standings. Beye will make his Ligue 1 debut this Sunday against in-form BlueCo-owned Strasbourg. “It’s a real privilege to be joining Stade Rennais F.C., a club with a long history in the league, known for its strong identity”, added Beye. “When you see the atmosphere at Roazhon Park, you understand what it stands for. The difficulties currently facing Stade Rennais F.C. must be transformed into a challenge.”
