Earlier in the week, Barcelona put out a strong statement against La Liga for a press release published on April 2, which included confidential information regarding the club’s financial dealings.

Reports yesterday even claimed that Barcelona are considering filing a motion against La Liga president Javier Tebas for leaking information.

Now, La Liga has finally issued a statement, responding to Barcelona’s strong rebuttal and demands.

La Liga’s response to Barcelona

In their most recent press release, La Liga acknowledged Barcelona’s recent statement regarding how they have breached confidentiality by leaking info that wasn’t public.

However, La Liga has completely rejected these allegations, arguing that there are certain exceptional cases where information can be shared.

La Liga’s official response to Barcelona

La Liga pointed to Article 5 of the Budget Preparation Rules, clarifying that confidentiality is not an absolute rule. They argued that in cases where the institution’s reputation or the competition’s integrity is at stake, some information may need to be shared.

La Liga went on to further argue that a lot of details of the financial dealings regarding the VIP seats were already covered extensively by the Spanish media. Therefore, there was very little confidentiality in the details La Liga shared.

Press release withdrawn, but no apology

That said, La Liga did confirm that they will take down the April 2 press release, but not as any form of apology.

The organisation made it clear that the press release was being removed to “avoid formal disputes” that could distract from the core issue, adding that this should not be seen as an admission of guilt or error.

Now, it remains to be seen whether or not Barcelona come out with any rebuttal to La Liga’s statement.
