Villarreal have signed Canadian international wingback Tajon Buchanan on loan from Inter Milan.

The La Liga club confirmed the 25-year-old’s arrival on their official site. He will play for Villarreal for the second half of the current season, while the loan deal also contains a purchase option.

Inter signed wingback Tajon Buchanan from Club Brugge last January.

The Canadian arrived as a reinforcement on the flanks after Juan Cuadrado had undergone surgery, ruling him out for the second half of last season.

However, Buchanan never quite cemented a place for himself in the Inter lineup.

The 25-year-old has made just one start for the Nerazzurri. That was in the Coppa Italia against Udinese in December.

In the meantime, Buchanan was on the sidelines for several months recovering from a leg break that he suffered in training during the Copa America last summer.

Buchanan wanted to leave Inter for the second half of the season.

Canada national team coach Jesse Marsch confirmed that the 25-year-old had asked for a loan move away in order to find more playing time.

Therefore, Inter looked to find a solution for Buchanan before the end of the January transfer window.

A number of clubs came forward with an interest in signing Buchanan.

In Serie A the likes of Monza and Torino identified Buchanan as a potential January reinforcement. Roma also reportedly inquired about the possibility.

Then, Ajax also showed an interest in the Canadian’s signature.

But in the end, it was Villarreal who made the decisive push.

The Spanish club have signed Buchanan on a six-month loan deal, which they confirm also contains a purchase option.

Villarreal do not announce the terms of the loan deal. But reports indicate that there is a loan fee of around €1 million, and that Villarreal can sign Buchanan permanently for around €12-13 million.

Meanwhile, Inter are reportedly close to signing Nicola Zalewski from Roma to replace Buchanan.
