Given the widespread interest he’s garnered since 2024/2025 got underway, Matheus Cunha’s impending decision to extend his Wolverhampton Wanderers contract raised eyebrows.
Documents are yet to be signed and sealed between all parties, but Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Saturday that a deal had been agreed that sees Cunha rewarded for his top-drawer efforts with an improved salary.
The attacker, hailed for having ‘sensational football IQ’ by Micah Richards – has notched 10 goals and four assists in his 19 Premier League appearances this campaign, establishing himself as one of the most prolific talismans in England’s top flight.
Manchester United fans will know all too well just how unstoppable he can be when at his best, too. During their trip to Molineux on Boxing Day, Cunha scored and assisted – while also playing the Reds’ midfield off the park – in Wolves’ shock 2-0 victory.
Reports had already suggested prior to the game that United were interested in signing the 25-year-old, so if they viewed the clash as something of an audition for their potential target, it’s safe to say he passed with flying colours.

With Cunha also on the shortlist of Arsenal and other top-six sides, fans across the division have begun pondering the terms of his prospective new deal and whether a release clause will be included for him to navigate a move away as seamlessly as possible if/when the time arrives.
Similarly, Wolves’ torrid form up to this stage has rendered them highly at risk of dropping down to the Championship come May. If this were to be the case, David Ornstein is adamant Cunha would seal a move away instantaneously.
“They (Wolves) are on the verge of signing Matheus Cunha to a new contract, which would come as a massive boost to everyone at Molineux. The deal that is proposed is four and a half years with the option of a further 12 months,” he told NBC Sports.
“There is a conversation about a relegation release clause. But if they were to get relegated, he would leave anyway, so I think that’s largely a moot point.
”If they were to stay in the Premier League, there would be no release clause in this new deal. Wolves don’t offer those. He’s a top player. He has got interest from Arsenal and others in the so-called top six.”
