Adam Wharton’s star continues to rise, and his latest performance under the Wembley arch only cemented his growing reputation. Credit to The Athletic for their sharp insight on a player who looks increasingly destined for the highest stage.
Against Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi-final, Wharton was calmness personified. His intelligent passing, positional sense, and pressing energy provided the platform from which Crystal Palace nearly turned the tide in their favour.

There is something beautifully old-fashioned about Wharton’s style — no fuss, just purpose. The ball into Eberechi Eze before Palace won a penalty was sublime. As The Athletic described it, “what a lovely ball to Eberechi Eze in the lead-up to the penalty.”
BBC’s Steve Wilson captured the moment when Wharton received a loose ball from Ezri Konsa. “Wharton hasn’t scored this season,” Wilson noted, as Palace fans screamed “Shoooooot!” Yet Wharton, full of composure, feinted and instead delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Eze. In a high-pressure moment, the maturity was striking.
Wharton’s reading of the game is equally impressive. His pressing spell, picking off Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers, and Jacob Ramsey, showcased anticipation and bravery. The article noted: “Wharton saw Rogers’ pass to Tielemans coming — an example of how he reads the game so well.”

It speaks volumes that Pep Guardiola himself weighed in: “An excellent holding midfielder. The impact has been really good, coming from the Championship to the Premier League, brilliant left foot, a really good player.”
There was disappointment that Wharton missed out on Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad, but the signs suggest it won’t be long now. As The Athletic noted, Wharton had “only just returned from four months on the sidelines” at the time of selection, which prompted an invitation to train but not to feature fully.

The way Wharton has continued to build his season since then leaves little doubt. A second England cap feels inevitable — and perhaps the interest of the Premier League’s biggest clubs too, much as Palace fans might fear it.
Oliver Glasner’s coaching deserves huge credit. Wharton’s happiness and progress underline the smart work happening behind the scenes at Selhurst Park.
A £22 million investment from Blackburn Rovers already looks like a bargain. It also prompts an important reflection: how much overlooked talent still thrives in the lower divisions?
For now, Palace fans will simply savour a young man growing rapidly into the heartbeat of their side — but keeping hold of him long-term might prove their next great challenge.
If you’re a Palace fan right now, it’s hard not to get emotional about Adam Wharton. He’s everything you could have dreamed of — calm on the ball, clever in tight spaces, reads the game two steps ahead, and plays with the confidence of a player ten years older.
Seeing Wharton boss Villa’s midfield at Wembley, watching him thread that disguised ball to Eze while the whole crowd shouted “Shooooot!” — that’s class you just cannot teach. The fact Pep Guardiola himself is tipping Wharton as “an excellent holding midfielder” says it all.
Sure, bigger clubs will come calling. That’s football. But for now, Wharton is Palace’s, and he looks happy. Credit to Oliver Glasner for trusting him, and to Palace’s recruitment team for spotting a real gem in the Championship when others looked elsewhere.
Whatever happens next, Adam Wharton has already given Palace fans memories to cherish. And if he does get called up by England again this summer, you can bet half of South London will be roaring their heads off in pride.
