At the end of a final-day league clash that saw them stick to their philosophy, Paris Saint-Germain secured a final Ligue 1 win of the season, 3-1 against Auxerre. Here's our look back at a night of celebrations at the Parc des Princes!
A week after their tour de force in Montpellier (1-4), Paris Saint-Germain returned to Ligue 1 action, this time at the Parc des Princes for the 34th and final matchday of the season, against AJ Auxerre. In an attempt to end the league season on a high, Luis Enrique fielded a central defensive pairing of captain Marquinhos and Willian Pacho in front of goalkeeper Gigio Donnarumma. Achraf Hakimi started at right-back, with Nuno Mendes on the opposite side of a back four. In midfield, Vitinha was supported by Fabian Ruiz and João Neves, while Bradley and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia took their places on the wings, book-ending Ousmane Dembélé in the centre.
Les Rouge et Bleu quickly took control of the game, stringing together passes in a very crowded Auxerre half. Vitinha and João Neves dictated the tempo, while their compatriot Nuno Mendes had the first chance of the game after beating Paul Joly on the left side of the box (11'). Moments later, Ousmane Dembélé came close after a brilliant pass from Vitinha, but the Parisian No.10 was denied by Donovan Léon (13'). The capital club kept pushing, but neither Kvaratskhelia (25') nor Fabian Ruiz (28') were able to convert Paris's dominance into a goal. This proved to be a gift for Auxerre, who didn't hesitate to open the scoring through Lassine Sinayoko after a quickly taken free-kick (0-1, 30').
But it wasn't enough to shake the confidence of our Rouge et Bleu, who continued to attack the opposition goal without rushing. They duly went within inches of equalising just five minutes later as Nuno Mendes rattled the Auxerre frame with a devilish free-kick (35'). As the break approached, Paris increased the pressure in the final third, but the visitors' defence held firm and they went into the dressing room a goal to the good.
Luis Enrique's men showed their intentions from the start of the second half, with Kvaratskhelia threatening from close range (48‘) before Dembélé forced Donovan Léon into another save (49’). Soon afterwards, our No.10 was again at the end of a well-executed team move, but he was unable to find the target (54'). It took until the hour-mark for Les Rouge et Bleu to finally get their reward, and it came thanks to the clinical finishing of Kvaratskhelia, who fired a crisp shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards out (1-1, 59').
It was the first time this season that Paris had managed to beat the Auxerre defence, and the goal and set up an exciting final half-hour at the Parc. And the Parisian crowd didn't have to wait long for the next big moment as, less than ten minutes later, captain Marquinhos put the capital club ahead with a powerful header at the far post (2-1, 67'). In the space of a few minutes, the Parisians had turned the tide and were looking to build on their second-half momentum to seal the win, with Nuno Mendes continuing to provide a constant threat down the wing. It was he who, after causing more trouble for Paul Joly, won a penalty for the home side. However, Donovan Léon chose correctly against Gonçalo Ramos and saved, keeping the visitors in the game (80').
In a one-sided end to the match, Paris turned to Kvaratskhelia to lead the attack. And although the Georgian winger hit Auxerre's post with his first attempt (83'), he kept his cool to beat the opposition goalkeeper a few moments later and complete the brace that sealed Paris’s victory (3-1, 88')! At the end of a match they dominated from start to finish, Paris Saint-Germain secured their final league win of the season and had an opportunity savour the 13th Ligue 1 title in Club history. This is Paris!
