Patrice Evra has weighed in on the debates surrounding whether Kylian Mbappé (25) should be considered the world’s best player in an appearance on the radio programme Rothen S’enflamme.

Evra, who captained France at the 2010 World Cup, told his former international teammate Thierry Henry that the Real Madrid star does not come close to previous Les Bleus stars. “When you start saying that [Mbappé] is the best player or one of the best, I’m thinking, he doesn’t even come close to Jean-Pierre Papin.”

The former Manchester United and Juventus player continued telling the room, “Let’s never compare Mbappé to Thierry Henry. Let’s never compare him. You’ve created this product. For me, [Mbappé] takes too much heat, but when you talk about the best players in the world… Guys, did you see Henry’s performances? You’re putting people on a pedestal who aren’t on a pedestal.”

This is not the first time that Evra has criticised his fellow countryman and the current captain of the France national team. On his debut appearance on Rothen S’enflamme, he said that Mbappé had been given too much at a young age, “It’s not Didier Deschamps but the whole of France that gave Mbappé too much. You gave him the keys to PSG, you give him the keys to the French team, but he’s still a young player.”

After a short-term contract at West Ham United in 2018, Evra called time on his playing career in 2019. Evra ended his career having won league titles in England and Italy, as well as the Champions League with Manchester United.
