Ligue 1 McDonald’s, 16/03/2025, Parc des Princes

Paris Saint-Germain saw off a spirited Marseille at the Parc des Princes to complete a Classique double over their arch rivals and extend their lead to 19 points at the top of the Ligue 1 table.THE MATCHAs far as these two teams are concerned, it’s one of the biggest clashes of the Ligue 1 calendar as Paris Saint-Germain hosted arch ‘Classique’ rivals Olympique de Marseille in the second clash between the two this season. After knocking out Liverpool in the Champions League, Les Parisiens were full of confidence but had a small blow when Gonçalo Ramos was announced absent from the match just before kick-off. Similarly for Les Phocéens, midfielder Ismaël Bennacer missed out at the last minute via injury, adding to Pierre-Emile Højbjerg’s absence in the middle of the park for Roberto De Zerbi’s side.

Les Parisiens came on strongly with the first chance of the game as Nuno Mendes tested Geronimo Rulli with a shot from just outside the box, after OM had initially dealt well with the high PSG press. The hosts would then get the opening goal of the Classique, as Ousmane Dembélé was fed in behind the backline and beared down on goal with blistering pace. The in-form Frenchman then skipped past an on-rushing Geronimo Rulli, turned past the Argentinian before finishing decisively into an open net with a lofted finish (16′).

De Zerbi’s side grew into the game despite the initial struggles and had a decent spell of possession near the half, winning the ball high with Nadir breaking through at times but not quite providing the final ball when needed most. A huge chance then came the way of PSG as Nuno Mendes burst down the left-hand side and provided a dangerous cross which was cleared by a combination of Balerdi and Luiz Felipe. But PSG would show once again why they are one of the most dangerous and efficient attacks in Europe right now as Fabian Ruiz was played through on goal and provided a cross for Nuno Mendes to double the lead for the hosts (41′).The second half started perfectly for Roberto De Zerbi’s side. Nuno Mendes’ backpass was intercepted by Adrien Rabiot, and the Frenchman closed down the angle on the goal and played across a square ball for Amine Gouiri to finish into the back of the game (50′). From here Marseille were looking to get back on level terms and were making good progress until substitute Pol Lirola met Achraf Hakimi’s searching cross and netted an own goal which effectively killed off the contest at the Parc des Princes in the final ten minutes.

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN PLAYER RATINGSGianluigi Donnarumma – 5

Achraf Hakimi – 5

Nuno Mendes – 6

Carried on from where he left off at Liverpool and in the first half acted as a dangerous outlet down the left side. He of course grabbed the goal in the first period, but was then seen wanting at the beginning of the second period – giving away the ball for Adrien Rabiot to find Gouiri for OM’s goal.

Lucas Beraldo – 5

Willian Pacho – 6

Warren Zaïre-Emery – 5

Vitinha – 6

Fabian Ruiz – 7

The Spaniard dropped in for Joao Neves and was busy in midfield for Les Parisiens. He was decisive in the first half with not one but two assists, a great ball for Ousmane Dembélé before serving Mendes on a plate with his second cross.

Kvicha Kvaratskhelia – 5

Désiré Doué – 6

Ousmane Dembélé – 7

OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE PLAYER RATINGS

Géronimo Rulli – 5

A mixed game from the Argentine shot-stopper. He was clearly at fault for the first PSG goal scored by Ousmane Dembélé after rushing out to face the Frenchman too hastily. Yet in the second period he came up trumps with a great stop from Achraf Hakimi’s header.

Felipe Ruiz – 5

Leonardo Balerdi – 6

Derek Cornelius – 5

Geoffrey Kondogbia – 5

Valentin Rongier – 6

Adrien Rabiot – 6

Rabiot dealt well under the weight of pressure and in the spotlight with the captain’s armband on his return to the Parc des Princes. Playing in his advanced midfield position he was combative in the middle of the park and latched onto Nuno Mendes’ mis-placed back pass to then provide the assist for Amine Gouiri’s goal.

Bilal Nadir – 5

A mixed performance from the Moroccan, who at times really helped OM with his intensity and tackling high up the pitch. He was yet left wanting in terms of his technical and passing ability in the final third.

Luis Henrique – 5

Amar Dedic – 5

Amine Gouiri – 7

Had the requisite intensity in pressing and grabbed Marseille’s goal at the start of the second half with a fine finish. GFFN | George Boxall – Reporting from the Parc des Princes, Paris.
