Preston are hoping to reach a fresh contract agreement with Liam Lindsay, with his current deal set to expire in the summer.
Preston are ‘close’ to agreeing a new contract with Liam Lindsay, with the centre-back’s current deal set to expire in the summer as it stands.
The 29-year-old joined North End in the winter window in 2021 from Stoke City, initially on loan, with the move made permanent a few months later.
Since then, he has gone on to make over 125 appearances for Preston, which includes featuring regularly under new boss Paul Heckingbottom.
However, with his deal running out in the summer, there have been doubts about Lindsay’s future, who could sign for a new club as a free agent.
Yet, it seems he is set to extend his stay at Deepdale, as journalist Alan Nixon revealed that the club are making major progress with Lindsay over a new deal, as he states a fresh agreement is now ‘close’.
It’s unclear how long a new deal will be, but all connected to the club will be hoping for an announcement over the coming weeks that Lindsay has put pen to paper.
This is a move that won’t be popular with every Preston fan, as it’s fair to say that Lindsay has been inconsistent over the years.
Therefore, some will feel that the club should let him go, with Heckingbottom overseeing what would be a major rebuild in the summer.
But, the reality is that Heckingbottom appears to trust Lindsay, and he has been playing, and doing quite well, as part of the back three defensive unit.
So, you can understand why the boss wants to keep him, and that doesn’t mean he won’t make changes in the summer anyway, and it will then be down to Lindsay, and everyone else in the squad, to show that they warrant a place in the XI.
Given the remarkably tight nature of the Championship, the immediate priority for Preston is to get enough points on the board to ensure they don’t get dragged into the relegation battle.
At the moment, they are five points clear of the bottom three, even though they do sit 16th in the table following Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.
Once safety is secure, Heckingbottom can turn attention to next season, which will be his first full one in charge after succeeding Ryan Lowe earlier this year.
