Argentine goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli has proven instrumental in Olympique de Marseille’s resurgence during the 2024-25 season. Signed from Ajax for €4m in the summer, in what had been touted as a surprise move, Rulli quickly established himself as a dependable and charismatic presence between the posts.
From his debut onwards – a commanding 5-1 victory over Champions League debutants Brest, where he made six crucial saves, including a penalty – Rulli has consistently demonstrated his ability to thrive under pressure.
Under the tactical guidance of Roberto De Zerbi, Rulli has additionally embraced a leadership role within the squad – no small feat given his short stay in the south of France. His calm demeanour in high-stakes situations has instilled confidence in Marseille’s defence, allowing the team to adopt a more expansive tactical approach. A standout performance against AS Monaco, where his crucial saves secured a vital win, showcased his ability to rise to the occasion during pivotal moments. It was subsequently followed up by an outstanding performance against Lille in December, where he was unlucky to have been beaten in the 87th minute after a string of top saves to deny the threatening Dogues.
Rulli’s contributions extend beyond his on-field performances. His integration into the club and the city of Marseille has been seamless. He has frequently expressed his appreciation for the passionate fanbase and their unwavering support, describing playing in front of over 60,000 fans as a privilege – words and actions that have quickly elevated him in the eyes of the hard-to-please Marseille fanbase, who have quickly forgotten his predecessor Pau Lopez.
Known for his exceptional penalty-saving ability and sharp reflexes, Rulli has brought much-needed stability to a backline that had struggled in previous campaigns. His international experience as a member of Argentina’s squad adds another layer of credibility and confidence to his role within the team. As Marseille push to return to the upper echelons of Ligue 1 and success in Europe, Rulli’s presence between the posts has become a cornerstone of their strategy. Given the number of outgoings and incomings that the club have endured over the past three seasons, it is safe to say this has been a transfer made in heaven, both in terms of cost and impact.
With Rulli anchoring the defence, Marseille fans have every reason to look forward to a promising 2025.
