Leon Balogun’s untimely injury midweek v St Mirren brought very much into focus just how poorly Rangers did in the transfer window, and we don’t just mean summer’s, but especially winter’s.
The failure to sign a single defender in January and only following it up with the-now-potentially-out-for-the-season Kasanwirjo and a ‘loser’ from Holland shows how badly Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen prepared for the new season, relying on John Souttar and Leon Balogun almost entirely.
Balogun’s prognosis is unknown – initially diagnosed as an Achilles, the truth is until a scan reveals the extent, we don’t know how long the Nigerian is out.
And as things stand, it’s a Dujon Sterling Robin Propper defence for the visit of Celtic next month.
It’s no overstatement to say that’s a wreck of a backline, with one guy who isn’t even a defender and the other… who isn’t frankly a defender either.
Souttar is out till likely February, but that’s guesswork at this point, while Balogun might return sooner but his age and fitness history make that unreliable.
This is on Clement and Koppen – making defence a non-priority, with our injury history?
It was asking for trouble.
Well these two now have it.
Giovanni relying on Ben Davies and Leon King because of his own injury crisis in 2022?
Clement may well have to recall Rangers’ on-loan defender in January himself if this continues!
Going into a new year with Ben Davies having to bail his parent club out? History repeating itself?
Bodes well for 2025 doesn’t it?
