Claudio Ranieri came out of retirement and turned a full-blown crisis at Roma into something special - now they’re the most in-form side in all of Europe.
Things looked bleak early on. Daniele De Rossi had just signed a shiny new contract running until 2027 after a solid 2023/24, but the good times didn’t last. Three draws and a loss in the opening four games, and he was out.
The Giallorossi brought in Ivan Juric Juric hoping he’d steady the ship, but that didn’t go to plan either. By matchweek 12, he was gone too, having picked up just three wins, a draw, and four defeats in Serie A. Roma were stuck on 13 points and drifting far too close to the relegation zone.
Out of options, Roma turned to a familiar face - 73-year-old Ranieri, recently retired and brought in as a short-term fix until the end of the season.
It didn’t click straight away. His return started with a loss to Napoli, a Europa League draw against Spurs, and another defeat to Atalanta. But then came a turning point: a 4-1 thrashing of Lecce in matchweek 14.
From there, Roma took off. Since the start of 2025, no team in Europe’s top five leagues has recorded more points. They’ve racked up 43, ahead of Barcelona on 41, and Bayern Munich and Strasbourg with 40 each.
And here’s another standout stat: Roma and Barcelona are the only two unbeaten teams in 2025 across UEFA’s top five leagues.
And it’s not just about results - their defence has been rock solid too. Roma have conceded just eight goals in 2025, the fewest of any side across the top leagues.
