The last two weeks could not have been worse for Real Madrid. After a generally underwhelming start to the 2024-25 season, the Merengues have seen their fortunes go from bad to worse in these two weeks.
Alarm bells started ringing in the Spanish capital after the crushing 4-0 defeat to FC Barcelona in the last El Clasico. But following that defeat, there was an expectation at the Merengue club that the team will start turning things around after such a humiliation.
However, nothing of the sort was experienced in the ensuing match against AC Milan, in which Los Blancos were even poorer than in the Barcelona match, and suffered another 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Italians.
With these two defeats, Carlo Ancelotti is under a lot of pressure at Real Madrid. Although the club hierarchy has conveyed confidence in the Italian tactician, there are already rumours of his potential departure from the Madrid club.
This is particularly the case as the Merengues’ top brass is worried about the club’s image after these two defeats, and the upcoming match against Osasuna can turn out to be a determining factor in Ancelotti’s future at Real Madrid.
In such a scenario, Mundo Deportivo reports that the club is already considering some candidates to be Ancelotti’s replacements, and they have two individuals in their sights for this purpose.
The first one is Santiago Solari, currently the Director of Football at Real Madrid, who also has experience of coaching the Merengues as he replaced Julen Lopetegui. It was under him that Vinicius made a place for himself in the first team.
Secondly, there is Raul Gonzalez, the current coach of Real Madrid Castilla, who is not having a great season with the quarry. The report claims Alvaro Arbeloa can be ahead of him in the race for the first-team bench.
Zinedine Zidane, who has not taken any job since leaving Real Madrid, can also be a candidate for the Merengues. But for now, Los Blancos is looking only for a temporary solution, as they have already selected Xabi Alonso as their long-term coach.
