Real Madrid finished the League Phase of the UEFA Champions League with a strong showing against the French side Brest, recording a 3-0 win in the last match of the first phase.
However, this win was not enough to get them a direct qualification to the Round of 16, as the Merengues finished 11th on the league table, and thus will have to play a playoff game to advance.
Still, the game last night was quite entertaining, even though Kylian Mbappe had an off night, which was rather surprising as he had been in fine form lately and was also expected to put on a show playing in his native France.
But as he struggled to get his name on the scoresheet, another Real Madrid star once again impressed on a Champions League night as Rodrygo Goes put on a show on the left wing.
The Brazilian forward scored two goals in this game, with his first goal being inarguably the best goal scored on the night. After getting a ball from Luka Modric in the 27th minute, Rodrygo beat a defender with a slick move, before making his way into the box with a quick dribble and putting in a low-cutting shot that ended up in the net after hitting the left post.
He doubled his tally on the night in the second half, as Mbappe took a shot on goal that was saved by the goalkeeper. However, the ball ended up right in front of the Brazilian, who made no mistake in sending it inside the net in the 78th minute to score the last goal of the match.
With these two goals, the Real Madrid forward ends the League Phase with 4 goals to his name, 1 goal more than Mbappe. But his performance last night was not only about the goals, as he shone in other aspects as well.
For instance, according to Sofascore statistics, he successfully completed all of his 6 attempted dribbles against Brest and also recorded a 92% passing success rate with 46 successful passes out of 50 attempted.
He also put in 2 key passes but was unable to get an assist to his name, while completing 2 of his 3 attempted long passes.
Rodrygo also showed his tenacious side in this game as he won 11 of the 12 duels he was involved in. Furthermore, he also made considerable defensive contributions with 5 tackles and 1 interception.
Overall, this was another impressive performance from the Brazilian, who has once again shown that he plays the best on the left wing in Vinicius’ absence. His compatriot has served his suspensions, both in La Liga and the UCL, and thus will return to take his place on the left wing from now on.
But, hopefully, Rodrygo will continue with this form as he goes on the opposite wing for the games to come.
