UEFA have announced the San Siro has been stripped of hosting the 2027 Champions League final.
The famous stadium, which is the home ground of both Inter and Milan, had been selected to host European football’s showpiece event, but the UEFA Executive Committee decided to suspend the final decision during a meeting in May.
This was to allow the Italian Football federation to submit further information on the refurbishment plans for the stadium, but with nothing concrete in place, UEFA have acted.
In an official statement, the body said: “As the Municipality of Milan could not guarantee that the San Siro stadium and the surrounding areas would not be affected by renovation works during the time of the 2027 UEFA Champions League final, it was decided not to award the final to Milan and to reopen the bid process to nominate a suitable venue, with a decision expected in May/June 2025.”
The future of the stadium has been up in the air in recent months, with both Milan clubs rejecting a plan to renovate the stadium, instead wanting a full rebuild in the surrounding area.
