André Onana’s Struggles Highlight Manchester United’s Defensive Dilemma

Foot Mercato’s recent report on André Onana sheds light on a turbulent 2024-25 season for the Manchester United goalkeeper. Having signed from Inter Milan for around €52 million, Onana’s early promise has been overshadowed by inconsistency.

Dismal Records and Fleeting Resilience

Onana’s start at Old Trafford has been anything but smooth, with “several notable errors in the Premier League” contributing to a staggering 81 goals conceded across all competitions — “setting a dismal record for the club since the 1976-1977 season”. Yet, there have been glimpses of his ability, notably “during solid performances in the Europa League, where he was decisive against Lyon with several key saves.”

Ruben Amorim’s Continued Support

New United boss Ruben Amorim is standing by his man. “He has decided to maintain his faith in him, believing that the team’s defensive problems cannot be attributed to a single player.” It’s a message of unity but also one that acknowledges the magnitude of United’s current fragility.

Saudi Arabia Beckons?

Transfer rumours are swirling, with Foot Mercato revealing, “the Saudi club Neom has already begun major discussions with his representatives”. Onana “is open to leaving Europe for Saudi Arabia,” but any deal will depend on aligning interests across multiple fronts.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

As concerned football fans, it’s hard not to feel a mixture of disappointment and scepticism reading this report. André Onana was brought to Manchester United with high expectations, touted as a progressive, ball-playing goalkeeper who would modernise their style under the new management.

Yet, conceding 81 goals — the worst since 1976-77 — is staggering. While it’s admirable that Ruben Amorim “believes that the team’s defensive problems cannot be attributed to a single player,” supporters can’t ignore that the goalkeeper’s role is pivotal. Onana’s “several notable errors in the Premier League” have cost United dearly, not just in results but in confidence across the backline.

The idea of him leaving for Saudi Arabia feels like a premature end to what could have been a long-term solution. If Neom are indeed “already in major discussions,” it signals a potential shift in Onana’s priorities — from rebuilding a tarnished reputation at a European giant to chasing financial opportunities elsewhere.

Manchester United fans, rightly, should be sceptical. Is this another example of a big-money signing faltering under Old Trafford’s fierce expectations? Or is it the club’s defensive chaos leaving Onana exposed and unfairly vilified?

Time will tell, but right now, the warning signs are flashing red.
