Sergio Ramos explains Real Madrid tribute with new jersey number | OneFootball

Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos has confirmed that his jersey number at new club Rayados is a tribute to the Spanish champions.

Veteran defender Ramos, for those who may have missed it, secured a return to the professional game earlier this week.

After sitting out the season to date following the expiration of his Sevilla contract last summer, the 38-year-old opted to take his talents to Mexico.

Ramos has penned a short-term deal with Liga MX outfit Rayados (CF Monterrey), joining the likes of Lucas Ocampos and Sergio Canales in Nuevo León.

Upon taking his place in front of the cameras for the first time in Mexico, Ramos, as alluded to above, sprung something of a surprise.

This came after it was revealed that the Spaniard had chosen an unusual new jersey number with Rayados – 93.

Drawn on his shirt selection on Friday, though, Ramos revealed that as much comes as a tribute to Real Madrid, referencing his iconic 93rd-minute Champions League final equaliser against Atlético back in 2014:

“The minute 93 was epic! This is a tribute to Real Madrid and my career.”
