Napoli will put their Serie A title hopes on the line when they take on mid-table Torino at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona later this evening. Level on points with defending champions Inter at the table’s summit, Antonio Conte’s charges remain firmly in contention for their second Scudetto in three years.
With only five matches left, there’s virtually no margin for error, especially with a one-off playoff tie in play. Napoli took full advantage of Inter’s slip-up at Bologna last weekend to draw level. Scott McTominay’s flying header inspired the Partenopei to a late 1-0 win at relegation-bound Monza.
McTominay was also on the scoresheet in December’s reverse fixture, guiding Napoli to a narrow triumph in Turin. Conte’s most reliable midfielder has been a point of difference this season, alongside Romelu Lukaku, who tops the assist charts in Serie A with ten. Both will likely be the focal points of Napoli’s attack tonight.
On the other hand, Torino will land in Naples with nothing but pride left to play for. However, the visitors may lack the motivation to throw a spanner in Napoli’s Scudetto chase, with the tenth-placed side stuck in mid-table, neither able to chase a top-six finish nor threatened by relegation in the final five rounds.
Napoli
After beating Empoli and Monza without conceding, Napoli are on the cusp of winning three consecutive league matches for the first time since January. Anything other than three points would compromise the home team’s quest to dethrone Inter in May, yet the omens look good for Conte’s high-flying squad.
While Torino’s visit looks challenging on paper, Napoli have collected at least six more points against top-half teams than any other side ahead of the round (W9, D6, L2). Furthermore, Conte has been a bogey manager for the Granata, beating the Turin outfit in eight of his ten managerial clashes against them (D2)
Conte’s remarkable touchline record against Torino fuels Napoli’s expectations for this game. Napoli last lost a home match against this opposition in 2009, racking up seven wins and five draws in the subsequent 12 fixtures. As if that’s not encouraging enough, they’ve been formidable on home turf lately.
Indeed, Napoli have pieced together an eight-game unbeaten home league run since a 1-0 loss to Lazio in early December (W6, D2) despite only keeping one clean sheet across their last six outings at the Maradona Stadium.
Torino
Brimming with confidence after a 2-0 home win against Udinese, Torino may look to end the season on a high. Goals from Che Adams and Ali Dembele helped the Granata halt a three-game winless league streak (D2, L1). They can now post back-to-back victories in Serie A for only the second time in 2025.
Despite facing long odds, Vanoli’s men have been tough to beat, losing just once across their last eight league matches (W4, D3). Therefore, they could still have their say in this intense title race, even though they’ve beaten Napoli only once since the start of 2016.
Against this backdrop, Torino have enjoyed a recent surge against top-two opponents, winning twice in their last three such league matches (W2, L1). That’s as many victories as they managed in the previous 33 attempts (D9, L22).
However, Inter fans hoping for a favor might want to lower their expectations. Indeed, Vanoli’s lads have only picked up one away league win this season against teams starting the round outside the bottom three (D7, L5).
While waiting for Juan Jesus’ recovery, Napoli can find courage in Alessandro Boungiorno’s return from injury. However, the Italian star should start on the bench. With David Neres still on the sidelines, Leonardo Spinazzola is the favorite to start on the left wing.
Meanwhile, Torino will travel without numerous first-team stars. In addition to club captain Duvan Zapata, Vanoli cannot count on Borna Sosa, Perr Schuurs, Alieu Njie, and Valentino Lazaro. Gvidas Gineitis must serve a one-game ban, while Ivan Ilic picked up a knock against Udinese.
Napoli (4-2-3-1): Meret; Di Lorenzo, Rrahmani, Marin, Olivera; Anguissa, Lobotka; Politano, McTominay, Spinazzola; Lukaku.
Torino (4-2-3-1): Milinkovic-Savic; Walukiewicz, Maripan, Coco, Biraghi; Ricci, Linetty; Vlasic, Casadei, Elmas; Adams.
Napoli’s defensive prowess could make the difference against goal-shy Torino. The visitors’ scoring problems are well-documented, and facing the best defensive team in Europe’s top-five leagues could prove a tall order.
