Lee Hendrie believes Ruben Selles should be given a chance to prove himself next season

Hull City are potentially eyeing a new manager, with Tony Mowbray thought by some to be in the frame.

Journalist Mike White from BBC Radio Humberside reported that a change of manager is “most likely” after incumbent boss Ruben Selles kept the Tigers up, with Mowbray one of the mooted options.

But that was dismissed by talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, who says he’s not one of the names being considered.

With names swirling and a change potentially afoot, we asked Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie for his thoughts on the situation.

Hendrie would be shocked to see Selles go

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Hendrie said: “Tony Mowbray is obviously available and there’s a shout of him being in the frame for the Hull City job if they sack [Ruben] Selles.

“I mean, they brought him to secure that they stay in the Championship, which they have done, so I'd be very shocked if they got rid of him.

“But then again, we've seen what the owners are like at Hull City, they've had their eye on play-offs, promotion for the last couple of seasons.

“And you only had to look at what they did with Liam Rosenior, he got so close and then, you know, he was gone.

“I think this is a little bit of a different situation because Hull found themselves in a real sticky predicament coming into the back end of the season, where they were fighting a relegation battle.

“They've got out of that, he's done the job, and he did a great job when he was at Reading, so I'd be very surprised if they did part ways with him.”

Hull City have form for rash decisions

Ruben Selles took over the Tigers at the beginning of December last year, with the club rock-bottom in the Championship.

While the final few weeks of the season were likely a bit more dicey than anyone at the MKM Stadium would have liked, as Hendrie says, he did the job he was brought in to do: keep them up.

Given that success, it only seems fair that Selles is given a fair opportunity, with a summer transfer window and full pre-season, to complete further work with his side and start with a fresh canvas next season.

But the Hull hierarchy do not operate on the basis of fairness.

Only last year, they dispensed with the services of Liam Rosenior, who was widely regarded to be doing a good job with the side, despite narrowly missing out on the play-offs.

If that cut-throat decision-making had gone well, the Tigers may well be sat now receiving plaudits for it; being urged to replicate the same decisive style this season.

But it didn’t go well; Hull plummeted to a relegation battle, while Rosenior took up a post with Ligue 1 outfit Strasbourg, who are challenging for a place in the Champions League.

Whether they bring in Mowbray or someone else, the mere fact of the owners choosing to not give Selles a chance, despite meeting his primary aim, will leave many presuming lessons have not been learnt.

It will do the owners no favours if supporters see a repeat of the Rosenior saga.
