With the Premier League title safely wrapped up, Arne Slot’s attention will now turn to next season and plotting a path to further glory.

The only signing made during Slot’s tenure so far has been Federico Chiesa, who has barely featured. There is an expectation therefore that Liverpool could be set for a ‘big summer’ in the transfer market to boost their chances of a successful title defence.

Fans’ fears were realised earlier this week as Trent Alexander-Arnold confirmed he will be leaving the club at the end of the season. Just two days later, Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio linked the Reds with one of the few players in world football whose passing and creativity are a match for Trent’s – Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne.

The Belgian midfielder is available on a free transfer, with the Saudi Pro League and MLS touted as potential destinations. These links are refuted in the Di Marzio piece, which claims that De Bruyne ‘has an offer from Liverpool’.

On the latest episode of our Journo Insight show, we asked the Liverpool Echo’s LFC correspondent, Paul Gorst for his thoughts on the De Bruyne story.

Paul said:

“I mean, just to watch him now and again – yes! But do Liverpool need him? No.

“City are in massive transition at the moment, and I think a big part of that has been because their best player has been unable to get near the levels that he’d previously been at for the best part of a decade.

“City, in a Liverpool-style way, have been quite cold with it, in terms of they know that they can’t carry on playing a player whose talents are on the wane.

“He’s one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League… but he hasn’t been offering that level of output this season, so it’s certainly one that Liverpool shouldn’t be looking at, and no surprise to hear that they are actually not.

“I’m not sure where this has come from in terms of where Di Marzio might have heard this… I think you can throw any name and link them to Liverpool, and it doesn’t sound too outlandish, but I think this one just about tips over into the realms of slightly ridiculous.

“It was no surprise to read this morning that Doyley [Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle] shot it down, because yeah – it’s a bit of a non-starter.”
