Barcelona are set to face Valencia in Copa del Rey on Thursday at Mestalla. This encounter will mark the ninth time these two sides will meet in this competition at that venue.

Interestingly, for the first time, the tie will be decided in a single match, making it imperative for Hansi Flick’s men to bring their best game from the very first whistle.

Historically, the Copa del Rey fixtures at Mestalla have often led to pivotal moments in the tournament. Out of the eight previous encounters, seven saw the winner of the tie go on to claim the Copa del Rey title.

The only exception was during the 1991-92 season. Valencia advanced to the last 16 after winning 2-0 at Mestalla and forcing a penalty shootout at Camp Nou following Barcelona’s 4-2 win. However, Atletico Madrid eventually lifted the trophy that year.

A look at the yesteryears

Recent history has been more favourable for Barcelona. The last three ties against Valencia in this competition ended positively for the Catalan side.

However, two of these victories required decisive second-leg matches at home, with scores of 2-0 in 2011-12 and a commanding 7-0 in 2015-16. Both initial clashes at Mestalla ended in 1-1 draws.

The last defeat for Barcelona against Valencia in the Copa del Rey dates back to the 2007-08 season. Despite two goals, Barcelona were defeated 2-3 after Juan Mata and Ruben Baraja found the net for Valencia.

Barcelona’s record at the venue

Overall, Barcelona have managed just two wins in eight Copa matches at Mestalla. These victories came in 2018 with a 2-0 scoreline and in 1998 with a 3-1 triumph.

The remaining fixtures resulted in three draws and three losses. Hansi Flick has only visited Mestalla once before as Barcelona’s manager. That visit was during the first matchday of the current league season, where Barcelona secured a 2-1 comeback win.

With the stakes high and a rich history between the sides, Barcelona will need to deliver a top-notch performance to advance in the competition.
