Paris Saint-Germain have dominated French football for years now, but success in the Champions League has eluded them.

The club reached the final in 2020 and the semi-finals in 2021 and 2023, but their continued shortcomings on the biggest stage have fuelled criticism. This season feels different.

Luis Enrique’s side looked vulnerable in the early rounds but have grown into the tournament.

They dismantled Brest 10-0 on aggregate in the knockout round play-offs, then recovered from a first-leg defeat to eliminate Liverpool on penalties at Anfield.

With the youngest average starting XI remaining in the competition, Enrique’s team are combining talent with resilience.

The Spaniard has already delivered domestic consistency. He is now tasked with leading PSG to their most important milestone. A familiar face stands in his way.

Unai Emery returns to the Parc des Princes with an Aston Villa side that continues to exceed expectations.

Since returning to the Champions League after four decades away, Villa have produced statement wins against Bayern Munich and Club Brugge.

They are also pushing for a top-four finish in the Premier League and remain in the FA Cup.

Emery is one of the most accomplished knockout managers in Europe. He has a strong record against top sides and is getting the best out of winter signings Marcus Rashford and PSG loanee Marco Asensio.

Villa have already eliminated one tournament favourite. They will believe they can do it again. Enrique is not underestimating the challenge.

“There are no favourites,” he said. “Villa are similar to us. They are organised, versatile and efficient. Emery is a great coach and knows how to get the best out of his players.”PSG are chasing a historic season where they could win multiple trophies. The Champions League is the one they crave the most.
