“There was [a sense of] déjà-vu,” said Adi Hütter post-match. There was a feeling of history repeating itself when Marcin Bulka once again saved a penalty at the Stade Louis II. The OGC Nice goalkeeper saved two from Folarin Balogun in last season’s Côte d’Azur derby before Le Gym snatched a late winner. This time, it was Mika Biereth, on red-hot form since joining AS Monaco in January, who was denied in the 3rd minute.
However, Biereth, who recently made his Denmark debut, could not be kept quiet. Despite that miss earlier in the match, he did get on the scoresheet early in the second half with an emphatic near-post finish. That goal levelled the scores after Jérémie Boga’s opener. Breel Embolo got the winner later in the half as Monaco went on to beat their local rivals 2-1.
In a post-match press conference attended by Get French Football News, Biereth was praised for his display of resilience. “This is his mentality, his character. He never gives up and he fights for the team. It is fantastic,” said the Monaco manager.
Since joining from Sturm Graz for €13m, Biereth has 12 goals, including three hat-tricks, all of which have come at the Stade Louis II.
