England boss Thomas Tuchel says struggling wingers Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford “know exactly what we want from them” as he mulls over whether to give the pair another opportunity against Latvia on Monday night.

Rashford and Foden started the opening game of Tuchel’s reign against Albania on Friday night and while the Three Lions cruised to a 2-0 victory, both endured quiet evenings at Wembley.

In the immediate aftermath, Tuchel admitted he had expected “more impact” from the duo, with Rashford recalled following a positive start to his loan spell at Aston Villa and Foden starting on the right-wing having previously grumbled about his use off the left at last summer’s European Championship.

In the long run, Tuchel will not be short of options in the wide positions, but with Cole Palmer and Bukayo Saka missing from this squad and Anthony Gordon returning to Newcastle because of an injury, Rashford and Foden may yet be sent into action again when Latvia come to Wembley.

“I’ve spoken to both of them and also in front of the group,” Tuchel said. “They know I appreciate the effort, especially off the ball. We can see in the numbers and when we watch the match back how much effort they put into defending high and the counter-press.

“Marcus had a lot of runs when we had the ball where we did not see him or use him and a bit unlucky with timing. Phil maybe is not finding the momentum at the moment that he can have but both of them are very positive, have every right to be positive and know exactly what we want from them.

“Ideally, we bring them in more one-vs-one situations and they have the confidence to take the one-on-ones.”

Meanwhile, Tuchel confirmed that Morgan Gibbs-White is likely to be involved, having missed out on the matchday squad against Albania.

The Nottingham Forest playmaker was a surprise omission from Tuchel’s initial squad but was called up after Palmer pulled out of the camp through injury.

“It's very likely that he will be in the squad,” Tuchel said. “Morgan is an amazing character, I have to say. I'm happy that he's with us. He deserves a lot of praise.

"It's also how we expect it to be because it should be an honour and it should be a privilege to play for England. The egos have to be put aside. That's what everyone's doing and Morgan does it in an impressive way."
