Following a three-straight win streak against Brentford, Manchester United, and Ipswich Town, Tottenham Hotspur lost to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in the Premier League on their home turf. The match finished with a 1-nil win for City, with a sole goal from the Norwegian striker Erling Haaland in the first half.
The Lilly Whites had the chance of completing a swap — or an unbeaten run, in American sports' terms — against the city of Manchester. This season, the Spurs had won their previous five games facing City and United, and a victory yesterday would mean a Spurs' complete domination of the Red Devils and the Citizens in the campaign.
However, Manchester City had other plans. After a loss at the Etihad Stadium to the league leaders, Liverpool, the Citizens needed to bounce back to keep themselves alive in the race for a top-four finish. In the first half mainly, Pep Guardiola's team finally showcased a dominant performance that reminded fans of last season's good form. If it hadn't been for Vicario, the Spurs could have gone to halftime with a more considerable margin to recover from.
Although Spurs played below recent standards in the first half, they changed gears in the second half and majorly controlled the match from that point on. Even so, the Spurs struggled to finish their opportunities in goal, which consequently led to City's win at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. Haaland even managed to find a second goal in garbage time, but VAR disallowed it for a handball. Here are three takeaways from Spurs 1-0 loss to Manchester City:
