Inter Milan prevailed over Lazio in front of their home supporters at San Siro in the most anticipated fixture of the Coppa Italia quarter-finals.
In the noticeable absence of the injured Taty Castellanos, Marco Baroni decided to field Loum Tchaouna as a striker, with Gustav Isaksen, Boulaye Dia and Mattia Zaccagni joining the attack. Nicolo Rovella and Matteo Guendouzi operated in the middle of the park, while Luca Pellegrini was handed a rare chance at left-back.
Although it was a timid start, Lazio seemed to be the more dangerous side in the early going. Isaksen emerged as the Biancocelesti’s main attacking threat. The restless Dane launched himself into promising positions and tested Josep Martinez on several occasions, but the goalkeeper was equal to it.
But while Lazio failed to make the most of their few opportunities, the Nerazzurri took the lead late in the first half with their first shot on target thanks to an absolute scorcher from Marko Arnautovic. Federico Dimarco’s corner kick was headed out, but the Austrian bomber was lurking on the edge of the box, and his perfect volley sailed into the corner while the stranded Christos Mandas could only gaze at it.
In the second period, Lazio made a few attempts to find the back of the net, but Mattia Zaccagni couldn’t inflict the damage from close range, while Pedro’s deflected shot was denied by the woodwork.
In the end, it was Inter who doubled their lead with Joaquin Correa coming off the bench to punish his old employers. The Argentine was tripped inside the box by Samuel Gigot, and as we all know, Hakan Calhanoglu hardly makes mistakes from the spot.
Sadly for Lazio, their Coppa Italia experience has now come to an end, so Baroni’s men must shift their focus towards the Top Four battle in Serie A as well as their promising Europa League campaign.
