The midfielder was forced off just minutes into Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg, after appearing to collapse when challenging for the ball unmarked at a corner.

A lengthy delay followed, in which Bentancur was given oxygen before being stretchered from the field. He was conscious and able to communicate in the dressing room but was subsequently sent to the hospital for further checks before being sent home in the following hours.

Asked for an update on Bentancur’s condition, Postecoglou told official club channels: “Good news, thankfully. He was in the hospital, obviously, and did all the tests in terms of just checking, making sure that everything was okay. He's back home, and he's fine.

“He's feeling good. We will obviously follow the protocols now. I think it's, a couple of weeks where you just got to make sure that everything's okay. But, thankfully, it looks like a concussion, but nothing more than that.

He added: “It was distressing, you saw especially Pedro [Porro], he was the first one there, and, knew it was a distressing situation. I thought the lads handled it well, and our medical team handled it well, and, as I say, thankfully, all good.”
