Time has a peculiar knack of playing games. Newcastle United was in the shadow of its own past for seventy years, weighed down with the agony of a golden history that was inaccessible. But Newcastle did something that had not been achieved for centuries — it won a national title after seventy years. By Dan Burn and Alexander Isak's objectives, the team beat Liverpool 2-1 and also claimed the Carabao Cup, bringing a sense of greatness to their supporters that had become more and more elusive. The club itself had not achieved a national trophy since 1955, and over the years thereafter, it had accumulated a stockpile of frustrations. This time, however, something was different.
Wembley Stadium was filled with Newcastle fans, who packed the stands with 32,000 scarves distributed by the club. The atmosphere before the final already suggested that something special could happen. On the field, Newcastle showed intensity from the first minute. In the first half, they created good chances, with Jacob Murphy and Sandro Tonali taking dangerous shots. Eddie Howe’s team dominated the offensive actions and showed confidence against an opponent used to major decisions.
The first one was perfectly timed during the match. In the 45th minute of the first half, Trippier took a corner kick and noticed Burn perfectly positioned in the box. The defender ran freely and headed hard into the bottom left corner past Kelleher, who had no chance. A goal now added to the club history. The celebration in the stands started there and never let up.
Newcastle resumed their attacking strategy in the early stages of the second half and doubled their lead shortly after. Livramento delivered the ball to Murphy in the 52nd minute, who played it to Isak to finish with ease. The Swedish forward, playing his 100th game for the club, kept his cool to score the second goal and bring the Magpies closer to the title. Liverpool kept on attempting to mount a comeback, under pressure from the last minutes, and managed to get one back through Chiesa in injury time, but no comeback time existed.
The whistle signaled a milestone for Newcastle. The club not only won a home competition for the first time after all those years, but also broke a long run of matches against Liverpool where they had failed to win. The Magpies had lost to the Reds since 2015, and the Carabao Cup final eventually ended their 17-match winless run against their arch-nemesis. Most importantly, it was Newcastle's 50th win over Liverpool, and this highlighted how much their win meant.
The last trip was flawless. Newcastle won the most flawless unbeaten competition, beating Arsenal in the semifinals and Liverpool in the final. The victory also maintains the team's excellent London record in 2025. The Magpies remain unbeaten in the capital, having already beaten Tottenham, Arsenal, and West Ham.
