Bristol City boss Liam Manning has provided an update regarding Nahki Wells' Robins future
Bristol City boss Liam Manning has poured cold water over speculation that striker Nahki Wells could be leaving Ashton Gate during the January transfer window.
The Bermuda international, who moved to the West Country in 2020, last penned a new deal with the Robins back in December 2022, when he extended his contract until June 2025.
With just a handful of months left on his current deal with the Ashton Gate side, the current transfer window presents Championship rivals with an opportunity to explore the possibility of signing Wells.
On 3rd January, transfer guru Darren Witcoop reported via X: "Nahki Wells a player to keep an eye on with a number of clubs exploring a potential deal for the Robins striker."
However, by Monday morning, Robins boss Manning had informed the Bristol Post that his club's striker would not be departing the West Country this month: "Those rumours are news to me.
"In my opinion, he’s not going anywhere.
"There are so many rumours everywhere, right?
"Nahki’s top.
"I think he loves being here, and I think the level of his game is in a really good spot."
Manning also added an update regarding the striker's contract talks, amid the possibility of Wells remaining at Ashton Gate beyond the summer: "We love him, and those talks will happen as and when."
As well as insisting that the Robins' second top scorer in the Championship would be remaining with the club, Manning admitted that his side may witness an uneventful transfer window: "Probably quite quiet.
"I would love to add, but I think it's probably more a case of moving a few on before we can do anything.
"I probably anticipate it being relatively quiet, so not too many signings no."
The Robins faithful will be pleased to hear that Manning has full faith in the fact that Wells will likely remain in the West Country during the current transfer window.
Having first moved to Ashton Gate five years ago, the former Burnley man is still a key member of the club's forward line, and has notched five goals and three assists in 21 Championship appearances and 14 starts.
The Robins lost important forward and promising youngster Tommy Conway to play-off challengers Middlesbrough last summer, but that blow has been somewhat softened by the attacking efforts of 34-year-old Wells, who continues to lead the line effectively when called upon.
In fact, while wideman Anis Mehmeti is the club's top scorer in the Championship with nine goals, Wells is Manning's highest-scoring out-and-out forward.
