Chelsea have just lost to Arsenal at the Emirates in one of the most unwatchable games of football we can remember watching.

The quality was dire, from both teams. The injuries to attackers on both sides was of course a major factor, but it wasn’t just that. The time wasting, petulance, abuse of officials and general incompetence in possession made the whole spectacle painful.

As you’d expect, that made the whole game pretty hard to write about, and the Athletic’s Simon Johnson had to focus on some matters off the pitch at full time.

He noted two interesting things from Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca at full time.

Firstly, he went over to the away support:

“Maresca went over to the away fans and appeared to hold his arms up as an apology,” Johnson noted in a Tweet.

That’s much appreciated – in fact it would be good to have a personal apology to anyone, anywhere in the world who sat through all 90 minutes of that. After that, he got chatting to an Arsenal player:

“Now [Maresca is] having a long chat with former #CFC midfielder Jorginho…looks like they were talking tactics. Odd.”

You can see Enzo’s apologies in the clip from our writer Charlie Patrick embedded here:

It’s been an odd day all around for Maresca – before kick off the usually pretty stern head coach was grinning widely to the cameras while joking that his missing attacking star Cole Palmer “is not in the toilet.”

There are two weeks off now and we desperately need the coach

Players coming back from injury will help, but even adding Palmer, Noni Madueke and Nicolas Jackson won’t help if we play like we did today, totally lacking in any urgency or attacking drive.
