Earlier this week, well-respected Swedish media outlet Aftonbladet indicated that the English heavyweights have been keeping a close eye on the player, although neither club is thought to have made an approach for her services at this stage.
Who is Wangerheim and why are clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester City watching the player’s development so closely? Here’s the lowdown on one of Swedish football’s hottest young talents.
Wangerheim has been on Hammarby’s books for her entire senior career to date. The player joined the club in 2020 and she has eased her way into the team. Despite being just 20 years of age, Wangerheim has already appeared for Hammarby on more than 100 occasions in all competitions, winning the OBOS Damallsvenskan title and Swedish Cup in 2023.
It is goalscoring where Wangerheim is really making her mark for her club. Last season saw the player net 13 goals in 25 OBOS Damallsvenskan outings, the joint-fourth highest return in the division. The player has built on that record this term. Her return of eight goals in seven games in the OBOS Damallsvenskan sees her sitting in second place in the goal rankings. Wangerheim also netted her first UEFA Women’s Champions League goal for Hammarby earlier this season in a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City.
On the international stage, Wangerheim recently broke into the Swedish senior squad for the first time and she made her debut in the nation’s 3-2 victory over Italy in the UEFA Women’s Nations League in April. The player is being tipped to become a future star for her country.
Wangerheim remains under contract at Hammarby until the end of the 2026 season but the Swedish club will undoubtedly face a battle to retain her services with interest in the player growing far and wide.
