Inter took the lead against Fiorentina in tonight’s Serie A match through a Marin Pongracic own goal which was originally awarded to Lautaro Martinez, but La Viola were furious with the decision in the build-up that led to the Nerazzurri opener.

The two teams kicked off in San Siro just four days after Fiorentina beat Inter by a 3-0 score line in Tuscany. Seeking revenge, Simone Inzaghi’s side were in control for most of the opening period, and had 80% of the possession 25 minutes in.

Why Inter’s opener against Fiorentina was deemed controversial

The break-through eventually came from a corner kick, which initially went down as Lautaro Martinez’s goal, but was later declared a Pongracic own goal.

However, the fact that a corner was awarded in the first place infuriated the opposition. Bastoni had somehow managed to hook an attempted cross in from the byline, but Fiorentina were adamant that the whole ball had crossed the line.

While goal-line technology is in play, the technology only covers the goalmouth and not the full byline, which means that referees do not receive an automatic signal if the ball has gone out of play for a goal-kick or corner.

The rest of the first half between Inter and Fiorentina was not without its controversy. La Viola equalised through a Rolando Mandragora penalty, which was awarded for a handball by Matteo Darmian after a VAR review.
