Why we absolutely don’t want Manchester United or Spurs (or Chelsea) making Champions League

Whilst we needed them to help secure a fifth Champions League place, there was an argument that Newcastle United fans shouldn’t be against the likes of Manchester United, Spurs and Chelsea picking up wins in Europe this season.

However, that bonus Champions League place swept over the finishing line some time ago.

So we were saved from any real awkward conflicts of conscience.

You know the type of thing.

Imagine if we had needed say Arsenal to win a Champions League final to trigger a bonus fifth Champions League place and Newcastle United having finished in that fifth position in the Premier League…

Thankfully these hypotheticals no longer apply.

I am happy to admit that I want all of the usual suspects (The self-entitled six clubs) to lose every single game in Europe, unless possibly if it benefits Newcastle United, as was the case earlier this season.

The gloves though are now well and truly off and just in case you aren’t all completely onboard just yet…

Why we absolutely don’t want Manchester United or Spurs (or Chelsea) making Champions League

Ahead of tonight’s European semi-final matches involving Manchester United and Spurs (and Chelsea), a BBC Sport report has helpfully pointed out exactly why, to any remaining NUFC doubters, who still need any convincing as to why we should all be desperate to see the likes of Manchester United and Spurs get smashed tonight in their Europa League semi-final first legs (both 8pm kick-offs, Athletic Bilbao v Man U, Spurs v Bodo/Glimt). It is Djurgarden v Chelsea in the Conference League semi-final first leg, an 8pm kick-off as well.

Anyway, BBC Sport has pointed out the MONEY involved.

How much money certain clubs could make in the Champions League next season and more importantly, how much they would miss out on if they don’t qualify!

Basically, it could cost the likes of Manchester United, Spurs and Chelsea as much as £100m if they don’t qualify for the Champions League next season (Chelsea can only do it through the Premier League, though they could ensure Europa League by winning the Conference League this season).

The new format of the Champions League that was introduced this season, has seriously increased the money clubs can make. Factors such as eight guaranteed league matches instead of six now, plus increased prize money.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire told BBC Sport:

“A good season in the Champions League can be worth far in excess of £100m. By the time you combine gate receipts, sponsor bonuses and the prize money available, the numbers involved are eye-watering.”

As Newcastle United fans, you would have to be crazy if you weren’t desperate for the likes of Manchester United, Spurs and Chelsea to miss out on the Champions League riches.

The fact is, there is still a massive financial chasm between the likes of Newcastle United and the usual six suspects, so every season where the likes of Manchester United, Spurs and Chelsea miss out is a bonus, especially if at the same time Newcastle United do qualify.

The signs are promising and this has been the recent Champions League qualifying for these clubs:

Manchester United – If they miss out again and don’t qualify by winning the Europa League, it will mean only one season in the Champions League in four years for Man U.
