Former Crystal Palace and Manchester United winger Wilfried Zaha has completed a surprise loan move from Galatasaray to MLS side Charlotte FC.
The deal will expire in January 2026 but Charlotte have the option to extend through to June, should Zaha prove a successful acquisition.
The Cote d’Ivoire international swapped Selhurst Park for the Turkish Super Lig in 2023 but has struggled to make an impact, making just 30 appearances.
Since leaving Palace, things haven’t exactly gone to plan for Zaha who also made just four appearances for Lyon in another loan spell earlier this season. This latest move, though, is an opportunity to establish himself outside of Europe and the 32-year-old will be keen to seize his chance.
Speaking on the move, Charlotte general manager Zoran Krneta said: “Wilfried is a world-class talent who has proven himself at the highest level of the sport as an elite goal scorer and chance creator.
“His performances in the Premier League and on the international level speak for themselves and we are confident that Wilfred can make an immediate impact in Major League Soccer.”
“He provides valuable versatility in the attacking areas of the pitch and adds that little bit of magic to our front line that can help us win more games. We are delighted to add a player of Wilfried’s pedigree and experience to our squad, and we’re excited to welcome him to Charlotte.”
Charlotte is one of the MLS’ newest clubs, founded in 2019, and they have found quick success, finishing fifth in the Eastern Conference last season. They were knocked out in the first round of the post-season playoffs by Orlando City SC, though, losing 4-1 on aggregate.
On arrival in North Carolina Zaha will link up with fellow Premier League veteran Tim Ream, who departed Fulham last season having made 312 appearances for the London club.
