There are limited opportunities at FC Barcelona and they can not be given to each and every player. There are distinct starters at the club, and these are players that the coach has blind faith in. However, that does leave behind rotational players who are unable to progress at Barcelona.
Still, that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the stories of some of the other players at the club who decide to stick through with their loyalty no matter what. One such player is Spanish goalkeeper Inaki Pena, who has had no issues being a back-up goalkeeper until recently.
This season, following the untimely injury to German goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, a pathway opened up for Pena to become the team’s starting player between the sticks. That is exactly how it went down initially, with the Spaniard being Hansi Flick’s choice and he also maintained the German tactician’s full trust.
However, once Wojciech Szczesny began to start for the team, there was simply no stopping him. The Polish shot-stopper became Flick’s number one choice shortly after, and it has been made clear enough that the player will retain that faith and responsibility within Barcelona.
Moreover, there are now talks of the club potentially renewing the player for another season beyond this current campaign. Due to this development, as highlighted by MARCA, Inaki Pena is no longer certain about his future at Barcelona and there is a belief that he could end up leaving to grow as a player.
Rationally, that makes sense from the player’s point of view. Despite the fact that he has been at the club since quite some time, he always believed that he would be the first-choice alternative to Ter Stegen if an injury or unexpected occurrence took place.
Now, it is becoming clear to him that a reliable place for him at the club would be extremely difficult to achieve. Moreover, with Szczesny being open to the possibility of continuing with Barcelona and with Ter Stegen now hoping to recover for the crucial stretch of the season, Peña’s future looks more bleak than it ever has before.
